Methodology

Research approach and documentation philosophy for the Kuk Sool knowledge base.

Project Scope

This project documents Kuk Sool within the broader context of Traditional Korean Martial Arts (TKMA).

Kuk Sool serves as a primary organizing lens, but it is not treated as an isolated system. Where appropriate, related lineages, parallel developments, and organizational relationships are included to provide historical and structural context.

The intent is not to establish authority or resolve competing narratives, but to organize and preserve knowledge in a way that makes relationships visible and supports informed study.

Practitioner–Historian Approach

This repository follows a practitioner–historian approach to documenting Kuk Sool terminology, history, organizations, and individuals.

The goal is not academic publication, but faithful preservation and organization of knowledge that is often transmitted informally within the martial arts community.

This approach combines:

  • practitioner experience and embodied knowledge
  • structured research and documentation practices

Distinguishing Types of Knowledge

Martial arts history is not derived from a single type of source.

This project distinguishes between:

  • documented history
  • organizational narratives
  • instructor lineage
  • oral traditions
  • personal observation

Living Tradition

Kuk Sool is a living martial art, not a closed historical system.

Organizations evolve, leadership changes, and interpretations develop over time.

This repository documents those changes rather than attempting to resolve them.

Transparency of Sources

Where possible, information is supported by identifiable sources such as:

  • published books
  • organizational publications
  • academic research
  • interviews
  • archival materials

When information originates from oral history or practitioner knowledge, this context may be indicated within the page.

Romanization of Korean Terms

Korean terms in this repository are presented using a K-based romanization standard consistent with common usage in Kuk Sool and related martial arts communities.

This standard is applied consistently across the site.

Guiding Principles

  • “K” is used in place of “G” where applicable (e.g., Kuk Sool, Kwan, Kyo)
  • Romanization reflects practical pronunciation in training environments rather than strict linguistic convention
  • Common Kuk Sool spellings are preferred over Revised Romanization

Reference Model

All terms are anchored to Hangul (Korean script), which serves as the authoritative reference for:

  • pronunciation
  • meaning
  • structure of compound terms

Naver Dictionary links are provided where appropriate to support:

  • pronunciation
  • linguistic context
  • clarification of compound terms

Variations

Where relevant:

  • alternate romanizations (e.g., Revised Romanization) may be noted
  • variation across organizations or instructors may be acknowledged

Romanization is treated as a practical approximation, not a formal linguistic standard.

Limitations

This project acknowledges:

  • incomplete access to archival materials
  • reliance on oral history in some areas
  • evolving organizational structures

Use of AI Tools

AI tools support:

  • organization of information
  • formatting and clarity
  • language refinement

They are not treated as historical authorities.
